FLO Mumbai, under the leadership of Chairperson Seema Saroj, organised a Historic Visit to the Bombay High Court, offering 18 attendees an opportunity to experience the institution’s rich legal and historical legacy. Members walked through the historic corridors, visited the courtroom associated with the trial of freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and observed proceedings before both a Division Bench and a Single Judge.
The members also interacted with Senior Advocate Mr. Nitin Thakkar, President of the Bombay Bar Association, who facilitated a curated tour of the Bombay High Court Museum. The visit provided a fascinating glimpse into India’s legal heritage, including the opportunity to view a handwritten letter by Mahatma Gandhi and learn about significant milestones in the history of the Court.
FLO Mumbai members got the opportunitiy to hear about the first Indian Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, the Honb’ble Lordship M C Chaggla, who was sworn in on 15th August 1857 when India celebrated it’s independence and the national anthem and Vande Mataram echoed in the Bombay High Court when the Indian flag was unfurled for the first time at the Bombay High Court.
The visit was an enriching experience that brought together law, history, and India’s freedom movement, giving members a deeper appreciation of the Bombay High Court’s role in the country’s judicial and historical journey. The programme was led by Ashu Thakkar, Lawyer, and had a footprint across Mumbai, with 18 beneficiaries, including 2 FLO Mumbai members.
