Empowering Women Through Traditional Dry Palm Leaf Basket Weaving

FLO Chennai, under the leadership of its Chairperson Dr. Amulya Rao, in collaboration with Kaivalam Trust, hosted the first batch of a three half-day Beginner’s Dry Palm Leaf Basket Weaving Workshop from 1st to 3rd July, 2026. Held under the FLO Chennai’s Life Skills Vertical, and the Handicrafts and Textiles Vertical. The workshop was specially curated for Self-Help Group (SHG) women and homepreneurs, providing them with hands-on training in the traditional art of dry palm leaf basket weaving.

A total of 20 participants attended the inaugural batch, demonstrating keen interest in learning an eco-friendly craft that has both cultural significance and commercial value. The sessions were led by experienced rural artisans who shared their expertise in weaving techniques, material preparation, finishing methods, and product design. Participants were guided through each stage of the weaving process, enabling them to create beautiful handcrafted baskets while understanding the importance of patience, precision, and craftsmanship.

Beyond skill development, the workshop served as a platform to preserve Tamil Nadu’s rich craft heritage by reconnecting participants with traditional artisanal practices that are gradually disappearing. The programme highlighted how handcrafted products can be transformed into sustainable business opportunities, encouraging women to explore entrepreneurship through locally sourced, environmentally friendly materials.

The baskets created during the workshop are versatile products suitable for gifting, festive occasions, weddings, home décor, and everyday utility. This opens avenues for participants to generate additional income while promoting sustainable alternatives to plastic and mass-produced products. The success of the first batch reflected the enthusiasm of participants and the relevance of traditional craft-based livelihood programmes in today’s economy. The initiative strengthened the connection between rural artisans and aspiring women entrepreneurs, fostering knowledge sharing and community development.

FLO Chennai extends its heartfelt gratitude to Past National President Ms. Usha Krishna for her generous support in making this initiative possible. Her encouragement and commitment to women’s empowerment have played an important role in creating meaningful opportunities that preserve traditional crafts while enhancing the economic independence of women.
