Winning Partnerships: Sports Marketing in India

FLO Chennai, under the leadership of Dr. Amulya Rao, in collaboration with The Performance Project, organized Winning Partnerships: Sports Marketing in India, an insightful knowledge-sharing session focused on the evolving landscape of sports sponsorship and marketing in India. Held under the Sports Vertical, the event brought together entrepreneurs, business owners, professionals, and decision-makers to explore how sports sponsorship can serve as a strategic business tool rather than simply a branding exercise.

The discussions emphasized that sponsorship is about building trust, strengthening community relationships, and creating lasting brand recall rather than just gaining logo visibility. The session commenced with an engaging presentation by Dr. Harini Muralidharan, who explained the fundamentals of successful sports sponsorship. She highlighted that impactful sponsorships do not necessarily require large budgets; even modest investments can generate significant visibility when aligned with the right audience and sporting platform.

Also, she stressed the importance of clearly defined sponsorship agreements covering deliverables, exclusivity, intellectual property rights, and measurable outcomes. The financial perspective was presented by Ms. Bala Ramaswamy, who provided valuable insights into structuring sponsorship investments. She explained how organizations can choose between CSR expenditure under Section 135 and marketing expenditure under Section 37(1), depending on their objectives and business structure. Her presentation demonstrated how strategic financial planning can transform sponsorship from a compliance activity into a long-term business growth strategy.

The session also focused on helping participants understand the financial and legal aspects of sponsorship. It explored how organizations can structure sponsorships as either Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives or marketing investments, depending on their business goals and tax considerations.
