SAKHI – Care Beyond Walls: An Initiative for Women’s Health, Dignity & Well-Being

FLO Mumbai, under the leadership of Chairperson Ms. Seema Saroj, undertook a meaningful social impact initiative at Byculla Jail, Mumbai, on the auspicious third day of Navratri, under its initiative, SAKHI – Care Beyond Walls. The initiative addressed the pressing need for menstrual hygiene among women inmates. During interactions, the team learned about the severe shortage of sanitary products, with some women reportedly having to cut a single sanitary napkin into two to make their limited supplies last longer.

Recognising that menstrual hygiene is a fundamental aspect of health, dignity and human rights, FICCI FLO  Mumbai distributed sanitary napkins to 500 women inmates, providing essential support and reinforcing the message that every woman deserves access to basic healthcare and hygiene. The occasion also marked the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FICCI FLO Mumbai and Rachna’s Funclub Foundation, establishing a collaborative commitment towards improving the health, dignity and well-being of women inmates through SAKHI.

In partnership with The Art of Living, a meditation session was conducted to help participants manage stress, strengthen emotional resilience and support mental well-being in the challenging environment of prison life. The initiative was supported by members of the FICCI FLO Mumbai Executive Committee, including Senior Vice Chairperson Samina Khorakiwala and Treasurer Prachi Jain.

Past Chairperson Renu Kapoor played a significant role in facilitating the initiative by introducing FICCI FLO Mumbai to Rachna Narvekar. Past Chairperson Aarmeen Mogul Dordi also personally joined the team at Byculla Jail and supported the distribution. The initiative reflected the spirit of Navratri and Shakti, demonstrating that empowerment encompasses not only opportunities but also healthcare, compassion, dignity and emotional support for women in every circumstance.
