FLO Pune, in collaboration with Pune International Centre, INTACH Pune Chapter and Creative Dignity, organised “National Handloom Day Celebration – India’s Living Textile Heritage” at the Multipurpose Hall, Pune International Centre. The programme celebrated India’s rich handloom traditions while creating awareness about the craftsmanship, cultural heritage and livelihoods connected to handmade textiles.
The programme began with an interactive Handloom Quiz conducted by Jui Tawade, followed by discussions on the evolution, regional diversity and cultural significance of Indian handlooms. Participants gained insights into traditional weaving techniques, natural fibres, pricing, and the time, skill and generational knowledge involved in creating authentic handloom textiles. Deepali Kholkar introduced Creative Dignity’s work towards strengthening India’s handmade ecosystem through capacity building, design and product mentorship, digital access, partnerships and market development.
Shubham Kabir presented the SaReLove Project alongside a Vintage Handloom Saree Showcase, highlighting sarees as carriers of memories, regional identities and generational craftsmanship. The Community Handloom Saree Exchange further encouraged re-wearing, preservation and circularity. The programme reinforced that supporting handloom goes beyond purchasing textiles—it involves valuing artisan skills, encouraging fair pricing, creating stronger markets and sustaining traditional livelihoods.
With 20 FLO members and 50 total participants, the celebration encouraged greater appreciation for handloom, handmade and natural fabrics while promoting more conscious and sustainable textile choices.
