Mehendi Mastery: Skill Development & Entrepreneurship

YFLO Kolkata, in association with Calcutta Foundation, conducted Mehendi Mastery: Skill Development & Entrepreneurship at the Apni Kutir centre in Topsia, with the participation of 60 women. The workshop was conceptualised as a vocational skill-development intervention, positioning Mehendi artistry as both a specialised creative discipline and a potential avenue for grassroots entrepreneurship.

The session focused on the technical fundamentals of Mehendi application and design execution. Participants were introduced to essential aspects of cone handling, pressure control, line precision, stroke uniformity and the development of intricate motifs. Emphasis on pattern composition, symmetry, detailing and consistency highlighted the importance of technical accuracy in producing refined designs. The adaptation of traditional motifs to contemporary bridal, festive and occasion-specific requirements also demonstrated the scope for design customisation and client-oriented service delivery.

The MSME Initiative formed a central component of the workshop, with a focus on converting vocational competencies into marketable services and independent business opportunities. Mehendi artistry offers multiple avenues for commercial engagement, including bridal bookings, festive assignments, wedding and event engagements, freelance work and home-based services. Participants were encouraged to view their acquired skills as potential business offerings, with opportunities to develop individual client networks, build service portfolios, strengthen brand visibility and generate repeat business. This approach reinforces the importance of enabling women to move beyond vocational participation towards independent enterprise ownership.

The Life Skills Initiative complemented the training by highlighting professional interaction, client handling, confidence, time management and independent service delivery. These competencies are essential for establishing credibility and sustaining a client-facing business. The Financial Literacy Initiative further strengthened the programme’s entrepreneurial orientation by recognising the importance of financial management in sustaining small businesses. Understanding the fundamentals of service pricing, material costs, expense allocation, income tracking, savings and reinvestment can enable aspiring entrepreneurs to make informed commercial decisions and manage their earnings effectively.

Through this intervention, YFLO Kolkata sought to create a practical connection between traditional craftsmanship, business development and financial independence. The workshop reflected the organisation’s commitment to supporting women in translating vocational skills into viable livelihood opportunities, strengthening grassroots entrepreneurship and expanding their participation in the MSME ecosystem.
