Lost in Time: Khajuraho

FLO Kolkata Chapter, under the leadership of Mrs. Mansi Agarwal, undertook Lost in Time: Khajuraho, a three-day cultural, wellness, and performing arts retreat from 6 to 8 October 2026, bringing together 55 FLO members for an immersive experience of India’s heritage, artistic traditions, natural landscapes, and shared fellowship. Khajuraho holds an exceptional place in India’s cultural history. The Khajuraho Group of Monuments, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986, represents the remarkable achievements of the Chandella dynasty, whose temples flourished primarily between the 10th and 11th centuries.

Their distinctive Nagara-style architecture and intricate sandstone sculptures bring together sacred and secular themes, offering insights into the religious beliefs, artistic sophistication, and social life of the period. The surviving temples also reflect the coexistence of Hindu and Jain traditions, making Khajuraho an important testament to India’s architectural and cultural inheritance.

Against this remarkable historical backdrop, members explored the craftsmanship and spiritual associations that distinguish Khajuraho’s temple heritage. The itinerary also included Chaturbhuj Temple, extending the group’s engagement with the region’s architectural legacy. The first day concluded at The Oberoi Rajgarh, where members enjoyed an evening of hospitality and cultural entertainment.

A special highlight was a classical dance performance by a local troupe presenting a dance form of Madhya Pradesh. By bringing regional performing arts into the retreat, the evening offered an opportunity to appreciate living cultural traditions alongside the historical monuments. The afternoon performance by Anuradha Menon, popularly known as Lola Kutty, added a contrasting dimension through stand-up comedy, humour and music. The shared laughter and entertainment contributed to the retreat’s emphasis on recreation, social connection and personal rejuvenation.

The second day included an early-morning excursion to Panna National Park, followed by a heritage walk at The Oberoi Rajgarh and the Spirit of Khajuraho light-and-sound show. A retro-themed dinner brought members together for an evening of informal interaction and celebration. On 8 October, the final day, members had the opportunity to visit Raneh Falls, where the Ken River has carved a striking landscape of granite formations. The excursion complemented the retreat’s architectural focus with an appreciation of the region’s natural heritage before the group’s return to Kolkata.

Across three days, the retreat integrated Cultural Tourism, Performing Arts and Mental Health & Wellness into a cohesive experience. With 55 members participating, it created a meaningful space for cultural discovery, artistic appreciation, relaxation, and stronger interpersonal bonds—extending the value of the retreat beyond sightseeing to a shared experience of learning, enjoyment, and fellowship.
