Chikankari – Weaving Heritage into Modern Wardrobes

FLO Ahmedabad organised an immersive textile appreciation session titled “Chikankari – Weaving Heritage into Modern Wardrobes” on 16th July 2026 at Dyelogue, Ahmedabad. It was held under the chapter’s Textile Initiative, with the theme “Knowing Your Chikankari Craft”. The session was led by Raghav Manocha, a Chikankari artisan and textile specialist. He covered the history, evolution, and cultural significance of Lucknowi embroidery, and explained how the craft has moved from its traditional roots into contemporary fashion.

A key part of the session was learning to identify authentic handmade Chikankari. Members were introduced to signature stitches and different levels of workmanship, and saw a showcase of exclusive craftsmanship, including Ektaar work. The speaker also discussed artisan skill, how to assess quality, and how to care for and preserve Chikankari garments.

The session highlighted why handcrafted textiles matter in sustainable fashion. It encouraged members to think about the artisans behind each piece and to make informed purchasing choices that support them. To help members apply what they learned, reference note cards were distributed for practical learning. An interactive Q&A session followed, where members put their own questions to the speaker.

The session ran for about two hours and was attended by 50 FLO members, with a digital reach of more than 500. Members left with a better understanding of authenticity, signature stitches, Ektaar work, and care and preservation. The event reflects FLO Ahmedabad’s continued efforts to celebrate India’s textile heritage and to build appreciation for the artisans who keep these crafts alive.
