Kannauj, a town renowned for its perfume heritage, became the starting point on 1st August 2026 for a quieter but equally significant endeavour — the launch of FLO Lucknow’s TAIPCHI Revival Initiative, dedicated to reviving one of the foundational stitches of Chikankari.
Taipchi is often described as the backbone of Chikankari — a running stitch that forms the underlying structure of much of the embroidery’s distinctive texture. Despite its importance, skilled mastery of the stitch has become increasingly uncommon as fewer young artisans receive the sustained training it requires.
FLO Lucknow’s decision to dedicate an entire initiative to a single stitch reflects a deeper understanding of craft preservation: protecting a tradition often means safeguarding its foundations, not simply its most visible elements.
Fifteen women began their training on the launch day under the direct guidance of Vani Anand. The programme spans three months, allowing participants the time and patience required to develop genuine mastery. Rather than compressing the learning process into a short workshop, the initiative recognises that traditional craftsmanship requires sustained practice.
What makes the programme particularly meaningful is the livelihood opportunity built into its design. Vani Anand has committed to directly procuring the finished work of every participant once they complete their training. This ensures that the women are not simply acquiring a skill and then searching for a market — a market is already built into the programme from the outset.
For FLO Lucknow, the initiative reflects a principle that has remained central to its textile and handicraft work: heritage and livelihood are inseparable. A craft tradition survives not through nostalgia alone, but through the economic dignity of the people who practise it.
Fifteen women in Kannauj, mastering one stitch over three months, mark the beginning of an initiative that seeks to preserve a treasured craft while creating meaningful and sustainable livelihood opportunities for their families.
