Aachar Making & Product Sizzle Workshop

As part of its efforts to strengthen grassroots entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities, FLO Kolkata organised the Aachar Making & Product Sizzle Workshop at the FLO Kolkata Skilling Centre, Chetla, in collaboration with Food Track by Amish. The capability-building session brought together 80 women from eight Self-Help Groups, along with two Initiative Heads, creating an engaging platform for practical learning and entrepreneurial exploration.

The workshop was designed around a simple yet powerful idea: traditional skills, when supported by knowledge, innovation and market understanding, can become meaningful avenues for income generation and enterprise development. Pickle making is deeply rooted in traditional culinary practices and familiar to many women. The programme therefore sought to help participants look at this existing knowledge through a new lens.

Rather than viewing it solely as a household skill, the workshop encouraged women to explore how hygienically prepared and thoughtfully presented pickle products could be developed into value-added offerings with entrepreneurial potential. The hands-on session introduced participants to practical aspects of food preparation and value addition while also highlighting the importance of product differentiation, branding and commercial packaging. These elements were particularly relevant for women aspiring to move from informal production towards a more structured and market-conscious approach.

An important outcome of the interaction was the growing interest among several participants in collectively developing and marketing value-added pickle products through their respective SHGs. This reflected a meaningful shift from skill acquisition towards entrepreneurial aspiration, with participants beginning to consider how their existing capabilities could be strengthened and organised into livelihood opportunities.

The workshop also brought attention to the need for continued capacity-building in areas such as product branding, pricing, commercial packaging and market access. For many first-generation women entrepreneurs, these aspects remain essential to transforming a skill into a sustainable enterprise. By bringing together practical training and entrepreneurial thinking, the Aachar Making & Product Sizzle Workshop created an encouraging first step towards strengthening women’s confidence, capabilities and readiness to explore food processing as a viable pathway for collective enterprise development.
