Beauty & Wellness Skills: Professional Development & Entrepreneurship

YFLO Kolkata, in association with Calcutta Foundation, is implementing Beauty & Wellness Skills: Professional Development & Entrepreneurship at the Apni Kutir centre in Topsia. The six-month vocational intervention supports 60 women through specialised training in two key areas of the professional beauty industry — facial care and makeup application. With sessions scheduled for three hours a day, three days a week, the programme provides approximately 234 hours of structured practical training per participant.

The skincare module focuses on the fundamentals of facial aesthetics and personal-care procedures. The learning framework includes identifying different skin types, recognising common skin concerns, understanding product suitability and following a systematic facial-care sequence. Participants are introduced to procedural stages such as skin cleansing, exfoliation, facial treatment application and post-treatment care. Particular importance is placed on maintaining hygiene, appropriate product handling and safe application practices, all of which are essential to professional beauty-service delivery. The makeup module explores the technical considerations involved in creating a finished look.

These include complexion assessment, colour theory, undertone matching, cosmetic product selection, foundation application, base preparation, blending and finishing. Understanding the relationship between skin characteristics and product selection is fundamental to achieving appropriate results for different clients and occasions. The Health & Wellness Initiative is reflected in the emphasis on skin health, facial maintenance and informed personal-care practices. The Life Skills Initiative extends the learning beyond technical application to include client consultation, understanding individual requirements, professional presentation and service etiquette.

A significant dimension of the programme is its alignment with the MSME Initiative. The beauty and personal-care sector offers multiple avenues for livelihood generation, including salon employment, freelance makeup services, bridal and occasion-based assignments, facial treatments and independent home-based ventures. The programme aims to enable participants to develop individual service portfolios, establish customer relationships and progressively build their own income-generating businesses.

The Financial Literacy Initiative complements this enterprise-oriented approach by addressing the financial disciplines required to operate a viable service-based business. Product procurement, inventory utilisation, treatment-wise costing, service pricing, expense monitoring and revenue management are important considerations in assessing business viability and managing resources effectively. Through this intervention, YFLO Kolkata seeks to connect professional beauty education with livelihood advancement and enterprise participation, enabling women to translate specialised skills into sustainable economic opportunities.
