THE SOVEREIGN CITIZEN: UNDERSTANDING OUR RIGHTS AND THE INDIAN CONSTITUTION

FLO Chennai, under the leadership of Chairperson Dr. Amulya Rao, hosted an awareness program, “THE SOVEREIGN CITIZEN: UNDERSTANDING OUR RIGHTS AND THE INDIAN CONSTITUTION,” for the students of SDNBV College. ‘Preamble – Soul of our Constitution ‘ was the subject matter of Justice Prabha Sridevan (Retd.). She outlined the four core principles of the preamble and engaged the students, exemplifying the importance of these promises to each and every Indian, irrespective of caste, religion, gender, or other barriers between its people.

She cited some of her judgments that she passed during her tenure as a judge of the Madras High Court – the worth of a homemaker’s work, gender equality and the right to education, as well as disability rights. ‘Rights of Women – Equality and Bodily Autonomy ‘ was the crux of Ms.Subathra Mylsamy, Managing Partner, A.K.Mylsamy and Associates LLP. She pinpointed the adherence to Equality, Dignity and Respect, Consent and Bodily Autonomy, one’s legal right to their body, and that no one has the moral right to force a person to do unwanted acts.

The session focused on how to recognise sexual harassment and how we can prevent and report it. She covered Digital safety, cybercrimes, responsible use of social media, and common mistakes related to them. A Q&A session followed this, which continued well after the program had finished. Many of the students there are first-generation students.
