Know Your Law, Own Your Power: Inheritance Rights of Women

FLO Indore, under thE leadership of Chairperson Ms. Vandana Gujrati, hosted an informative webinar, “Know Your Law, Own Your Power: Inheritance Rights of Women,” with Ms. Pinky Anand, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India. The virtual session aimed to educate FLO members about their legal rights and possessions and how they can navigate them in their favour through lawful means.

The session commenced with a meaningful discussion on essential women’s rights in India. Ms. Pinky Anand urged FLO members to remain informed about their property, financial assets, and taxation matters, and confidently exercise their rightful claims without allowing emotions to influence important legal and financial decisions.

The esteemed guest speaker also discussed provisions of the Hindu Succession Act, particularly Section 6, which recognises daughters as equal coparceners, and Section 15, which governs the succession of a woman’s property. She also discussed the provisions under Muslim Personal Law, emphasising that a daughter is mandatorily entitled to a share in family property.

Ms. Pinky Anand urged women not to be emotional while exercising their rights. She covered notable examples and landmark cases, including those involving the Lalit Hotel Group, the Jindal Group, and the Sanjay Kapoor inheritance dispute, demonstrating how inheritance laws are interpreted and applied in real-life situations.
