#BaatKaro – Igniting Candles of Hope | Suicide Prevention Awareness Campaign

FLO Amritsar brought its #BaatKaro suicide prevention awareness campaign to The Doon School, creating a space for students and teachers to engage in an open conversation around mental health, wellness, and emotional resilience. The initiative was conducted as part of Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and centred on a simple message: it is important to speak.

Rather than treating mental health as a difficult or distant subject, the programme encouraged students to acknowledge their emotions, communicate openly, and understand the value of reaching out when something feels overwhelming. A dedicated workshop was conducted by Dr. Nishtha for teachers and students. The session focused on creating awareness around mental wellbeing and encouraging participants to engage with the subject in an informed and sensitive manner.

Teachers were also included in the conversation, recognising their important role in noticing changes in students and creating supportive spaces within the school environment. Tannya Khanna, Chairperson, FICCI FLO Amritsar, further brought the message of #BaatKaro to life through the song Baat Karo. She explained the lyrics and the simple thought behind the song — that speaking about what one is going through can be an important first step.

The discussion helped connect the campaign’s message with something familiar and relatable for young audiences. The programme culminated in “Igniting Candles of Hope”, a Purple Candle Lighting initiative symbolising hope, compassion and solidarity. Students and teachers came together in this collective gesture, reinforcing the idea that no one should feel alone in moments of emotional difficulty.

The initiative was supported by the OTT Transformative Foundation, with Melody Home Music, Swarna Trails and Timeless Amritsar extending their support to the campaign. Through #BaatKaro, FICCI FLO Amritsar sought to take suicide prevention awareness into educational spaces and encourage a culture where conversations around emotional wellbeing can happen with greater openness, empathy and understanding.
