PAITHANI WEAVES Live Loom Display & Artisan Workshop

Under the leadership of Seema Saroj, Chairperson, FLO Mumbai, and the Executive Committee, the Textile Vertical hosted an immersive artisan workshop, celebrating the rich heritage and living legacy of Paithani weaving. The initiative was led and curated by Monisha Gidwani, Joint Executive Secretary and Textile Vertical Lead, FICCI FLO Mumbai, bringing the craft, artisans and stories of Paithani directly to FLO members.

The highlight of the afternoon was a live loom display, featuring a traditional loom brought specially from Paithan. Professional weavers travelled from Paithan to demonstrate the intricate process of weaving a Paithani saree and engage members in an interactive conversation about their craft. Members learnt about the history and evolution of Paithani, the generations of knowledge embedded in the tradition, the creation of distinctive motifs and borders, and the time and precision required at every stage of weaving.

The interaction also brought attention to the economic realities of the handloom community, including rising costs, market pressures, and the challenges of sustaining artisan livelihoods. The weavers shared that weaving continues to remain a family tradition, with younger generations showing interest in carrying the craft forward. Adding another artistic dimension, a Jaipur-based artist presented hand-painted sarees, demonstrating the creative possibilities of traditional Indian textiles.

A curated display of artisan fabrics and sarees allowed members to appreciate the diversity, intricacy and beauty of these crafts up close. The workshop reinforced the importance of preserving India’s living textile heritage while recognising the artisans whose knowledge, skill and dedication sustain these traditions. Every Paithani is more than a saree—it represents generations of heritage, craftsmanship and livelihoods woven together, one thread at a time.
