3 Generations, 3 Perspectives

The evening unfolded as an intimate and thought-provoking conversation on the many dimensions of entrepreneurship and the changing meaning of legacy. The opening context established an important premise: family businesses carry far more than financial value. They carry history, values, expectations, relationships and institutional memory. Yet every generation encounters this inheritance differently. One generation may build the foundation; another may strengthen and expand it; while the next may seek to reinterpret it in response to a changing world.

The presence of three generations within one entrepreneurial conversation gave this idea remarkable depth. The dialogue explored the journey from experience to reinvention and from inheritance to innovation, demonstrating that succession need not be a linear transfer of responsibility. It can also become an opportunity for new thinking, new ventures and new entrepreneurial identities.

The discussion brought particular relevance to FLO Kolkata’s MSME / Startup Cell & Networking initiative by examining entrepreneurship as a process of identifying opportunities, building enterprises and creating meaningful professional networks. The conversation underscored how exposure to diverse entrepreneurial journeys can help emerging entrepreneurs recognise that there is no single pathway to building a successful enterprise.

Through the lens of Financial Literacy, the event also highlighted the importance of financial confidence as an essential component of entrepreneurial independence. The conversation around women creating and expanding businesses reinforced the broader significance of understanding financial choices, taking informed risks and building sustainable enterprises.

The Life Skills dimension emerged organically through reflections on courage, adaptability, decision-making, and the ability to navigate transitions. Entrepreneurship, as the conversation demonstrated, is not shaped by business knowledge alone; it also demands resilience, self-belief, clarity of purpose and the capacity to evolve when circumstances change.

The event further resonated with FLO Kolkata’s Export initiative by broadening the conversation around enterprise and opportunity. As businesses evolve beyond traditional boundaries, entrepreneurial growth increasingly involves recognising new markets, understanding changing consumer landscapes and remaining receptive to opportunities beyond one’s immediate ecosystem.

A particularly compelling dimension of the event was the discussion around the next generation. The emerging entrepreneurial perspective demonstrated that carrying forward a legacy does not necessarily mean replicating what came before. It can mean absorbing the values, learning from the experience, and then using that foundation to build something relevant to a new generation of consumers and changing market realities.

The conversation also reflected on the role of women in this evolving entrepreneurial landscape. From established business leadership to emerging ventures and new-age enterprises, the event demonstrated how women are increasingly participating not merely as inheritors or custodians of family businesses, but as entrepreneurs, decision-makers, innovators, and creators of entirely new business possibilities.

The audience significantly enriched the event. The room brought together FLO Kolkata women entrepreneurs, YFLO Kolkata members, MBA students from iLEAD, women entrepreneurs associated with Career After Family (CAFE), and aspiring women entrepreneurs. This diversity transformed the event from a speaker-led conversation into a broader entrepreneurial exchange.

The event created a rare entrepreneurial continuum under one roof—bringing together accomplished business leaders, established and emerging women entrepreneurs, young management students and aspiring entrepreneurs. By placing experience, ambition and aspiration within the same conversation, FLO Kolkata created a powerful space where wisdom could be shared, questions could be voiced, and the next generation could encounter entrepreneurship not as a distant ideal, but as a tangible, evolving and attainable possibility.

The event ultimately moved beyond the conventional vocabulary of succession. It became a reflection on how experience informs ambition, how ambition can renew legacy, and how every generation can contribute a distinctive chapter to an entrepreneurial story that continues to evolve. The integration of MSME / Startup Cell & Networking, Life Skills, Financial Literacy, and Export gave the event a multidimensional relevance.

Entrepreneurship was explored not merely as the creation of a business, but as a broader journey encompassing enterprise development, financial confidence, personal capability, networking and the recognition of new opportunities. For established entrepreneurs, the event offered an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of business and legacy. For emerging entrepreneurs, it offered relatable pathways and possibilities.

For young management students and aspiring entrepreneurs, it provided direct exposure to entrepreneurial journeys that demonstrated how businesses are built, transformed, and reimagined across time. The event therefore created value at multiple levels—knowledge, exposure, inspiration, networking, and entrepreneurial orientation—while reinforcing FLO Kolkata’s commitment to enabling women to participate meaningfully across the entrepreneurial spectrum.
