FLO Kolkata, under the leadership of Chairperson Ms. Mansi Agarwal, conducted a Tie and Dye Workshop at the FLO Kolkata Skilling Centre, Chetla, on 8 July 2026, as part of its Textile & Handloom Initiative. The hands-on workshop was designed to introduce participants to the creative possibilities of tie and dye while strengthening their practical understanding of textile surface design. Through demonstrations and guided experimentation, participants explored how simple tying techniques can be transformed into distinctive patterns and visual effects on fabric.
The session introduced participants to a variety of tying methods, including rubber-band techniques, which enable different sections of the fabric to resist the dye and create unique designs. Participants also explored both single-colour and multi-colour dyeing, gaining an understanding of how the choice and sequence of colours can influence the final appearance of the textile.
A significant part of the workshop focused on colour theory and colour combinations. Participants learned how to select shades from the same colour family to create a cohesive visual effect, while also understanding how contrasting colours can be combined effectively. They were further guided on combinations that may adversely affect the outcome, helping them make more informed creative choices.
The practical nature of the workshop encouraged participants to learn through experimentation rather than simply observing demonstrations. This approach enabled them to understand the relationship between tying technique, dye application and colour selection while developing greater confidence in creating their own designs.
Beyond technical skill development, the workshop provided participants with an opportunity to engage with textile craft as a form of artistic expression. It encouraged creativity, patience, attention to detail and independent decision-making, all of which are valuable in developing proficiency in textile-based crafts.
The workshop also reinforced the relevance of traditional textile techniques in contemporary creative practice. By introducing 35 participants to a versatile and accessible surface-design method, FLO Kolkata sought to encourage continued engagement with textile crafts while creating opportunities for skill enhancement and potential livelihood development.
The initiative concluded with an interactive feedback session, during which participants expressed their appreciation for the engaging and practical learning experience. The positive response reflected the value of hands-on creative education in strengthening both technical capabilities and artistic confidence.
