Upcycling & Sustainability

FLO Kolkata organised Upcycling & Sustainability under Textile/ Handloom initiative for the livelihood of grassroots women from the community. The workshop was conceptualised as a meaningful intervention at the intersection of sustainable craftsmanship, skill development, and women’s economic empowerment. It introduced participants to the idea that discarded textile materials need not be regarded as waste; with creativity, technical understanding, and thoughtful product development, they can be transformed into useful and commercially relevant products.

The session engaged 25 women beneficiaries in a practical process of collecting, identifying, and segregating fabric scraps according to different material categories, including cotton, silk, and other reusable textiles. This initial stage helped participants understand the importance of systematic material recovery and responsible utilisation before progressing to the creative production process.

Using textile remnants that may otherwise have been discarded, the women explored ways of developing pouches, scrunchies, small bags, and other handcrafted accessories. The activity enabled them to gain hands-on exposure to sustainable product development while strengthening their creative confidence and appreciation for resource-efficient production practices.

A particularly significant dimension of the initiative lies in its potential to extend beyond the workshop itself. The products created by the women will be provided opportunities for display and sale at prestigious bazaars and curated platforms across Kolkata, facilitated by FLO Kolkata. This market-facing approach is intended to provide visibility to the women’s craftsmanship and create a direct link between skill development and potential income generation.

Importantly, the proceeds generated from the sale of these products will directly benefit the participating women, allowing them to derive economic value from their own skills and creations.

By combining sustainability with market access, the initiative represents a practical model of circular entrepreneurship. It transforms discarded materials into products of value while creating opportunities for women to build confidence, develop entrepreneurial thinking, and explore pathways towards financial self-reliance.

Through such interventions, FLO Kolkata continues to demonstrate how sustainable practices can create impact beyond environmental conservation—supporting dignity, creativity, livelihoods, and inclusive economic empowerment at the grassroots level.
