Nukkad Natak – Community Awareness Through Street Theatre

FLO Kolkata, under the leadership of Chairperson Ms. Mansi Agarwal, organized Nukkad Natak at the AK Chetla Centre, Chetla Central Park, in collaboration with the Empathree Team. The street play beautifully used the power of street theatre as an accessible, engaging, and relatable medium for community awareness and behavioural change. Through the universal language of performance, dialogue and storytelling, the initiative sought to bring important social issues closer to students and community members in a manner that encouraged reflection, discussion and personal participation.

The objective was therefore not merely to communicate a message, but to create a shared experience that could encourage participants to question existing attitudes, reflect on their own role within the community and consider the importance of positive behavioural change. The initiative also aimed to strengthen essential life skills such as awareness, empathy, communication, responsible decision-making and community participation.

The performance was conducted by the Empathree Team, a group that used the participatory format of Nukkad Natak to communicate meaningful social messages. Empathree’s approach extended beyond the performance itself, creating an opportunity for dialogue and discussion following the play. Through this interactive engagement, participants were encouraged to share their perspectives, ask questions, and reflect on how individual awareness and responsible action can contribute towards positive change within their communities.
