FLO Chennai, under the leadership of Chairperson Ms. Niyati A. Mehta, hosted the session “Weaves of Kashmir” with Firdose Ahmed Jan at Kamala Craft Shop. The session gave members valuable insights into the rich heritage of Kashmiri weaving, where Firdose Ahmed Jan spoke in detail about the different types of fibres used, the long process involved in making a single shawl, which can take up to 18 months, and the historical significance of Kashmir weaves.
Firdose also explained how to differentiate shawls based on texture and fabric, highlighted traditional designs, Kalamkari patterns, and discussed the level of acceptance of these crafts in the current generation. The interactive session included a Q&A segment, where members had the opportunity to touch and feel the shawl, understand the softness and texture of the weaves, and learn about proper maintenance and washing techniques for Kashmiri shawls.
In addition, Firdose also spoke about traditional spinning methods and emphasized that women are the backbone of this craft, as they are primarily responsible for spinning the yarn, thereby empowering women through this age-old tradition. Around 25 attendees participated in this insightful session.
The session concluded as an informative and enriching experience, deepening members’ appreciation of Kashmiri craftsmanship and heritage. A big shout-out to textile and handloom vertical lead Asha Ravi for planning and executing this program. A big thanks to Crafts Council of India for collaborating with FLO for this event.
