Women in Business Series

FLO Uttarakhand, under the leadership of Chairperson Dr. Geeta Khanna, organized an inspiring session under its Handloom, Textile & Handicrafts initiative: ‘Women In Business Series’ at Hotel LP Residency, Rajender Nagar, Dehradun. The event featured a heartfelt and insightful conversation with Sujata Biswas and Taniya Biswas, the dynamic sister duo behind the celebrated sustainable fashion label Suta.

The session traced the sisters’ journey from distinct professional backgrounds to building a purpose-driven brand that redefines handloom narratives in contemporary fashion. The event was chaired by Lubna Mirza and Jyoti Rathore, Initiative Leads for Handloom, Textile & Handicrafts at FLO Uttarakhand, who set the tone by reaffirming FLO’s commitment to empowering womenin business, craft, and culture.

Moderated by noted poet, cultural speaker, and founder of Niravadhi, Dr. Prachi Chandra, the discussion shed light on women-led entrepreneurship, creative vision, and the social impact that lies at the heart of Suta. Sujata and Taniya shared how their childhood holidays spent visiting villages and observing artisans profoundly shaped their outlook.

What began in 2016 as a parallel venture alongside their jobs soon became a full-time commitment. Initially experimenting with apparel like skirts and suits, a visit to a saree weaver in Howrah shifted their focus entirely. Awestruck by the grace and comfort of the saree — a garment closely associated with their mother and grandmothers — they decided to make it Suta’s signature product.

Today, Suta stands out for its subtle colours, breathable fabrics, and honest design philosophy. Yet, at its core, Suta remains about people: the thousands of artisans whose lives have been positively impacted and the wider community it represents. Dr. Prachi Chandra guided the conversation, bringing out the sisters’ creative process, entrepreneurial journey, and the values that define Suta.

It was attended by Past Chairpersons Kiran Bhatt Todaria and Anuradha Malla, FLO Executive Committee Members, including Senior Vice Chairperson Tripti Behl, Secretary Smriti Batta, Harpreet Marwah, Nisha Thakur, and Maneet Suri, along with the working team and several FLO Uttarakhand members.

Supported by The Shawlstory, Happy Homes – Curated Home Decor, LP Hotels, and Niravadhi, the evening celebrated not just the entrepreneurial journey of Suta but also FLO Uttarakhand’s commitment to meaningful conversations that inspire, connect, and empower.

Around 42 people participated in the event, which focused on empowering Indian artisans and weavers by providing them a platform for networking and engagement. This event achieved an outreach of 1.2 million people, showcasing exceptional engagement.
