Finance for Beginners: How to Read a Balance Sheet

Led by Dr. Divya Abhishek, Chairperson of FLO Chennai, the “Finance for Beginners: How to Read a Balance Sheet” session, attended by 185 people provided an introduction to financial literacy. Designed to simplify complex financial concepts, the session aimed at empowering participants with the knowledge needed to interpret financial statements and make informed financial decisions.

Dr. Divya Abhishek began by breaking down the fundamentals of a balance sheet, explaining its 3 core components: assets, liabilities, and equity. Participants learned how businesses record and classify their finances, ensuring a structured representation of their financial position. She emphasized the importance of understanding liquidity and solvency, enabling individuals to assess a company’s stability and financial health effectively.

The session also covered key financial ratios, such as the current ratio, debt-to-equity ratio, and return on equity, which helps in analyzing a company’s performance. In addition to balance sheets, investment basics were also discussed. Dr. Abhishek provided an overview of the stock market, mutual funds, and tax planning strategies, equipping participants with essential knowledge of wealth creation and financial security.
