Divine Threads, Empowered Hands

FLO Kanpur, under the leadership of Chairperson Kriti Shroff, in collaboration with Kanpur Ploggers, organised a program named “Divine Threads, Empowered Hands” focusing on empowering rural women and jail inmates by providing them a good opportunity to earn a livelihood. This ongoing initiative involves collecting sacred garments and turning them into beautiful bandhanwars.

A sacred cloth reborn. A life reignited. The project was initiated to empower women through sustainable livelihood opportunities, while honoring faith and protecting the environment. Niketaa Rathie was the day chair of this event who properly managed things and ensured best experience for the attendees.

Highlights of the Project

  • FLO Kanpur is collecting Poshaaks once worn by the Divine – sacred garments offered to deities in temples and homes.
  • Instead of being discarded into rivers or landfills, these sacred fabrics are repurposed with respect and devotion.
  • The fabrics are transformed into Bandhanwars by rural women and jail inmates, combining traditional artistry with meaningful employment.
  • Training has already been provided to women inmates, with further expansion planned.

Impact

  • Skill-Building & Livelihoods: 20+ women jail inmates trained; more to be included in the next phase.
  • Environmental Protection: Sacred textiles were saved from harmful disposal into rivers and landfills.
  • Dignity through Work: Marginalized women gain livelihood, confidence, and renewed hope.

The initiative has been deeply appreciated for its blend of faith, sustainability, and women empowerment, transforming divine offerings into symbols of livelihood and resilience. Also, this program is aligned with the vision of FLO Kanpur to empower women by providing them better earning opportunities to support their families and build employable skills to foster self reliance.
