Dear All, YFLO and Studio Napean had organised talk on “The MODERN and CONTEMPORARY INDIAN ART: A BRIEF HISTORY” by India’s foremost art consultant, Amrita Jhaveri on 13th November, 2010 at Gallery Studio Napean. Since 2000, Amrita Jhaveri has been advising art collectors on aspects of Modern and Contemporary Indian art. Jhaveriestablished Christie’s presence in India in the early1990s before moving to London as a technical specialist in contemporary Indian art. In 2005 she established India’s first professional art consultancy. She is the author of 101: A Guide to 101 Modern and Contemporary Indian Artists ( India Book House, 2005 ), which was also sold at the venue.As an expert and a market commentator, Amrita is often called upon to share her knowledge and experience of Indian art in public forums. She has covered a range of topics from aspects of modern and contemporary Indian art to the history of collecting in India. A respected collector, Amrita has loaned works from her private collection to institutions such as the National Gallery of Modern Art ( Mumbai ), Tate Britain and Tate Modern ( London), IVAM ( Valencia ), Reina Sophia ( Madrid ) and Kunstmuseum ( Bern ) among others. Using images from her own collection, Amrita attempted to tell the story of modern and contemporary Indian art from AmritaSher-Gil breakthrough in the 1930’s to artists of her own generation such as Subodh Gupta and Atul Dodiya who came to international acclaim in the past decade. From installations by Sheela Gowda to videos by Shilpa Gupta, Amrita shared some of the pleasures and challenges of collecting and living with contemporary art. This was a very attended talk and all those who came drew great and deep insights into the art world and how to go about collecting art. She gave key tips on what not to do and what to do if you want to become a serious collector- Buying from a good reputed gallery, picking up works from Artists solo shows and buying at the right time were some of them.
