SHATTERING STEREOTYPES : “Breaking Barriers, Playing Beyond: Empowering Women in Sports”

Young FICCI Ladies Organization (YFLO) organised a landmark program “Shattering Stereotypes”, Women in Sports at T-Hub on 12th April, 2024. This event echoed the voices of women empowerment with the esteemed panelists, Dr. Maral Yazarloo-Pattrick, Ms. Michelle Kakade, and Ms. Neha Aggarwal Sharma as they graced the stage for this event.

FICCI YFLO Chairperson Ridhi Jain set the tone for the event, affirming, “We are not just individuals but a collective force of women entrepreneurs, each with unique dreams, aspirations, and journeys.” She emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating, “Today’s event holds special significance as it marks our inaugural event on breaking barriers in sports and beyond.” She was in conversation with these remarkable women while discussing their path in breaking stereotypes and challenges they faced in making a name for themselves in sports.

In a poignant reflection on the challenges facing women athletes, former Olympian & table tennis champion, currently serving as Chief Partnerships Officer at Olympic Gold Quest, Neha Aggarwal Sharma emphasized the ongoing struggle for safety, citing it as a significant barrier that dissuades parents from encouraging their daughters to pursue sports. However, she expressed optimism, noting, “Things are slowly changing.”

Sharma hailed the current era as a “golden period” for Indian women in sports, asserting their equality and prowess alongside men. She confidently stated, “In sports, gender is not a barrier,” highlighting the upcoming Paralympic Games and the stellar performance by the ace limbless archer Ms. Sheetal Devi as a testament to this belief. Neha asserted to be humble like Ms. Sheetal Devi and not complain. If given a level playing field, girls will outshine boys, she added.

Dr. Maral Yazarloo-Pattrick, Iranian Motorcyclist and Women’s Rights Advocate shared insights from her extraordinary journey, underscoring the sacrifices necessary for achievement. Reflecting on safety measures in biking, she emphasized the importance of adaptability across different terrains and countries. Dr. Maral is known to bring a unique perspective to the discussion on women safety and empowerment while advocating for women’s rights.

Michelle Kakade, a seasoned Desert Marathoner, challenged age stereotypes in sports, stating, “It is all in your mind.” She emphasized the role of connections in securing sponsorships, highlighting the challenges faced by non-mainstream sports like running.

YFLO Chairperson Ridhi Jain reiterated the significance of the event, praising the panelists for their resilience and commitment to breaking barriers in sports and beyond. She emphasized their collective impact as women entrepreneurs shaping the future of women in sports and societal acceptance.

Together, these remarkable women shattered stereotypes, broke barriers, and paved the way for a more inclusive and equitable future in sports. Their stories of triumph and resilience will continue to inspire and empower individuals around the world to pursue their passions fearlessly.

As the event concluded, attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to support and uplift women in sports, ensuring that every athlete has the opportunity to thrive and succeed on and off the field.
