NATIONAL HANDLOOM DAY : VISIT TO THE SILK CITY of ODISHA

This visit was carried out under the national initiative of Handloom & Textile, spear headed by our EC Member Mrs. Jasmeet Kaur and team.

Odisha handloom weave is deeply rooted in its cultural traditions & passed down through generations. Each handwoven piece carries the essence of history- reciting the unspoken stories of past, connecting communities to their roots.

Visit details:

• Place- Berhampur, Ganjam District
• Popularly known as ‘Silk City’ of Odisha
• 180 kms from state capital
• Initiative by- Jasmeet Kaur (EC Member)

The visit aimed at:

– developing an understanding for the different forms of traditional weaves.
– promoting their products among chapter members and through social media.
– giving them direct business.

Interacting with the weavers about developing few new designs by combining traditional methods with contemporary designs.
This visit not only provided immediate financial support but also helped us know more about the amount of effort and hard work put in by the weavers. We also got an opportunity to interact with women weavers who are leading their family businesses by continuing these weaves & also reiterated the importance of their opinion within the community.

We aim to reach out to more weavers from the traditional handloom society and bring their works to the forefront so that one day they shall all be financially stable and carry their works out of passion and not just as one of the means of survival.
