The humble moringa, better known to us as the drumstick tree has earned the sobriquet of the ” Miracle Tree” . It’s magical properties start from its calcium-rich leaves, vitamin-enriched pods – the tree itself is weather and drought resistant and off late it is being planted extensively across the globe to migrate climatic changes .
The task that FICCI FLO Bangalore Initiative had ahead was to plant 5000 moringa seed balls across the city of Bengaluru. The mud balls with moringa seeds inside needed to be made quickly and involved a lot of muddy messy activity – and who better to do it than an enthusiastic bunch of school kids!
On the sunny morning of 27th June, the students of Vyasa International School gathered under their huge banyan tree- and got their hands ( and uniforms!) nice and grubby, and deftly rolled out the balls in record time.
The mud balls were neatly packed and stacked in boxes for the FLO Go Green event which was held on 30th June at Cubbon Park.
The lively and vibrant park was enhanced by our members and their families who turned up in large numbers in shades of green to support the initiative.
The Sunday morning event was honoured by our celebrity guests – Kajol Bhatia ( Mrs India Karnataka 2018) , Ricky Kej ( composer and Grammy award winner), Vasundhara Das ( actor and playback singer ), Roopa Mouli (Pinkathon Ambassador) , Tejaswi Surya ( BJP MP from Bangalore South) and Yathaarath Murthy ( child prodigy who can sing national anthems of 260 countries).
The guests planted saplings in the park and also distributed the moringa seed balls to the various running, cycling and biker groups who volunteered to take upon the task of dispersing the seeds along their adventure paths.
A painting competition on the green theme was simultaneously organized for children by Iktaara. This again was a huge success judging by the number of tiny tots who turned up by hordes on an early Sunday morning! We also had kids from NGO s join in.
With such an impressive turn out of guests, it was only natural that the event garnered huge media and public interest.
It was interesting to note that the humble moringa brought all of us together on a mission – 5000 future trees- nothing short of a miracle!
