The Jamakalam project, initiated by FLO Chennai and The Handloom and Textile Vertical of FLO Chennai, aims to empower the Todas of the Nilgiris and the Jamakalam weavers of Bhavani. The event was held on October 24th, 2024 at ITC Grand Chola, celebrating and preserving traditional weaving techniques. This initiative focuses on enhancing the livelihoods of artisans through skill development and improved market access.
This project seeks to revitalise this craft while ensuring that artisans receive the support and recognition they need to thrive in a modern marketplace. The Jamakalam art form, known for its intricate patterns and vibrant colors, represents a significant cultural heritage that has been passed down through generations.
The project was inaugurated by Mr. Tarun Tahiliani, whose presence highlighted the importance of this initiative. Under the exemplary leadership of Ms. Divya Abhishek, Chairperson of FLO Chennai, the Jamakalam project is further supported by Ms. Arti Bagdy, head of the Handlooms and Textile Vertical, along with dedicated committee members Ms. Nabila Avais and Ms. Varsha Raheja. The event not only aims to secure financial stability for artisans but also to elevate the cultural value of their work. Ms. Divya highlighted the project’s transformative role in fostering sustainable livelihoods and preserving the Jamakalam craft. Beyond supporting individual artisans, it also aspires to spark a national movement honoring handmade crafts. Through partnerships and resources, this initiative empowers artisans and envisions a vibrant future for India’s traditional craftsmanship.
