FLO North East celebrated World Environment Day

On the occasion of World Environment Day , FICCI FLO North  East under the initiative of Dr. Srutimala  Duara, Chairperson FLO North East, planted more than  200 tulsi plants and a few sandalwood trees in Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra on June 5, 2019. Twenty-eight varieties of tulsi plants were donated by Dr. Prabin Saikia, who has a large garden called Bantirtha in Narayanpur. He is a collector of varieties of local herbal and flowering plants, 30 varieties of tulsi, 6 varieties of gathion,  among other trees. A large number of tulsi plants were given to FLO by the Forest Department, Government of Assam.  Honoured guests were Anand Khatoniyar, Brand Ambassador, Environment and Forest Department

Prabin Saikia spoke on how he passionately collected varieties of tulsi. Since his boyhood days, he learnt from his grandmother to identify tulsi. He spoke on the medicinal benefits of tulsi. Dr. Saikia said that out of the number of plants mentioned in Sankardev’s dibya baan in Haramohan chapter, he has 90 percent of them.

Chief Conservator of Forest, H. K. Talukdar spoke on the necessity to curb pollution that is spreading all over, the use of pesticides that have brought down the standard of tea and other crops, the need to build up small scale business related to incense, bamboo and essential oils that are abundant in Assam.

Padmashree Surya Hazarika thanked FLO for the tulsi plants and said that tulsi is known for purifying the air. The whole area surrounding the naam-ghar in Kalakshetra will now have beds of tulsi.

Ananda Khatoniar applauded the initiative taken by FLO to plant trees and said that we all need to revive the greenery of Assam. To reduce pollution he gave a call to use cycles that are pollution free and healthy.
