FLO Hyderabad Virtual Session on Data Privacy

FLO Hyderabad, in collaboration with Knowledge Partner Tatva Legal, hosted a virtual session titled “How Safe is your Data: Data Privacy in 2024” on May 1, 2024. The session aimed to raise awareness about safeguarding individual privacy in the digital age, focusing on the implications of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and best practices for data protection.

The keynote address was delivered by Sri Jayesh Ranjan, IAS – Special Chief Secretary for ITE&C and I&C Depts., Govt of Telangana. He emphasized the need for data protection and outlined lawful recourse for individuals in case of data misuse.

The session highlighted the widespread collection and unauthorized use of personal data, emphasizing the rise in cybersecurity incidents in India. It outlined the salient features of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 and its implications for both data principals and data fiduciaries. Real-life case studies were used to illustrate best practices for data protection and cybersecurity awareness.

Key takeaways from the session included awareness about safeguarding online actions, transactions, and social media footprint, understanding the various ways in which data is collected and used with or without consent, knowledge about the legal courses of action available in case of fraudulent incidents, and information on steps taken by the Central Government and Telangana State Government under new laws to protect individuals against cybercrime and data misuse.

Tatva Legal has joined as a knowledge partner for Legal and Policy awareness, with plans for more such sessions on various topics in the future.

The session was attended by nearly 50 members and was both engaging and enlightening, providing valuable insights into data privacy and cybersecurity in the digital age. Continued collaboration with Tatva Legal for future sessions and further dissemination of knowledge and best practices for data protection and cybersecurity are planned as action items.
