FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) Lucknow chapter organised a Face to Face with Mr. O.P. Singh, Director General U.P. Police at the state-of-the-art Police Headquarters in Lucknow, to address members on steps taken by the UP Police towards solving issues of women and child safety, and development.
Mr. Singh spoke about how the UP Police has been proactive in taking measures to stop crimes against women and children, especially the girl child. He also spoke about adoption reforms, tracking/rehabilitating missing children, empowerment of women and good governance.
The UP Police’s initiatives for women and children include:
– Implementation of the Juvenile Justice Bill
– Setting up of the One-Stop Centre
– 1090 Women Helpline
– Child helpline
– 33% Reservation of Women in Police
– Special Mahila Police Volunteer Programme
– An app for women security and setting up of a panic button in mobile phones for women
– Month-long awareness campaigns to help spread information about the role of police and helplines
What shone through the presentation and also through the Q & A session was his commitment to the cause of women upliftment and engagement. As mentioned by a Lady SHO, his willingness to bring about a socio-economic change in the state in favour of women is what differentiates him from many others who claim to be women sympathisers.
His voice broke while talking about several cases involving girl child molestation. An AV which talked about supporting victims of sexual harassment by helping them get back to a normal life in a dignified way was also shown by the Police department.
Mr. Singh’s readiness to receive ideas presented to him, his positivity and willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty towards ensuring a brighter and safer tomorrow for women, earned him a loud cheer from all the FLO members present at the event. The interaction went a long way in changing the perception of the police in the mind of these women.
The Face to Face was organised under the aegis of FLO Lucknow and Kanpur Chairpersons Madhuri Halwasiya and Anuradha Varshney respectively. The event was chaired jointly by Ritu Mathur from Lucknow and Sangeeta Khurana from Kanpur and moderated by Swati Verma.
