On AshtamiPuja and International Day of the Girl Child, FLO Amritsar organised an event titled “Conversations about Courage, Concern & Change”, highlighting women’s rights, safety, and empowerment on October 11th, 2024.
Smt. Raj Lali Gill, Chairperson of the Punjab State Commission for Women, emphasised the need for systemic changes to ensure women’s safety, stressing peace as essential for empowerment. The event also enacted a play on female foeticide. The play “ਧੀਆਂ ਜੇ ਨਾ ਜੰਮੀਆ” (If Daughters Are Not Born), addressed the tragedy of female foeticide and challenged societal norms.
The Round Table Discussion featured a distinguished panel of experts, including Smt. Raj Lali Gill, Ms. Tripta Sood, A.C.P. CAW & C. ASR, Dr Simarpreet Sandhu, Chairperson FLO Amritsar, Dr. Anmol Sekhon, an educationist and skill development specialist, and Mrs. Neeta Mehra, a prominent businesswoman and social activist. Together, they addressed women’s safety and empowerment, emphasising the critical role of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act and the Domestic Violence Act in safeguarding women’s rights, particularly significant as October is recognised as Domestic Violence Prevention Month.
The panelists, including law enforcement and FLO members, discussed enforcing the Domestic Violence Act and PoSH policies. They highlighted the urgent need for cross-sector collaboration to combat domestic violence and create safer environments for women.
The event concluded with a resounding success as FLO Amritsar served as a crucial platform for raising awareness and driving collective action toward a safer, more equitable future for every woman. This makes it a fitting tribute to the International Day of the Girl Child and Ashtami Puja.
