Life Unbarred : Visit To Tihar Jail New Delhi Feb 20 , 2013

The much awaited YFLO visit to TIHAR jail was a huge success.We visited the central Tihar jail headquarters located in Tihar village in the janakpuri area of New Delhi where they have a complex of 9 jails.

Mr Sunil Gupta (Law Officer Prison, Tihar Jail) addressed the members and took great pride in telling us that Tihar prisons are considered one of the better managed jails in the country particularly in the area of correctional administration.He gave us an insight into the innovative measures taken to reform and rehabilitate inmates and graciously answered a plethora of questions from our very curious members about day to day activities of inmates to the lifestyle of the high profile inmates lodged at Tihar.

After our talk we were taken to the central jail complex where we visited the women’s prison.

We were taken to the women’s cell to look at the living conditions .We also visited the creche and nursery for the children of the inmates run with the assistance of an NGO. The jail administration runs various programmes for skill development in various units such as weaving , tailoring , paper , food processing , artificial flower making , bakery etc. After the visit the members were treated to a delicious High tea prepared by the jail inmates.

The visit was very appreciated and received much praise by each &every member who attended it.
