Interactive Session with Dr (Mrs) Kiran Bedi on The Movement Against Corruption May 24th, 2011

The recent times have been witness to allegations of large scale corruption cases such as the 2G spectrum allotments, the Common Wealth Games (CWG) scam, the Adarsh Building Society scam, etc. While stringent steps must be taken to tackle issues of corruption in the country, it is primarily important to create an effective prevention as well as punishment system against this evil.

In this perspective, FLO organized an interactive session with Dr (Mrs) Kiran Bedi on
“The Movement Against Corruption” on May 24, 2011 at FICCI.

Dr. Bedi acknowledged her long-standing association with FLO and mentioned that she was proud to be amidst such a dignified gathering of women and talk about the movement against corruption.

She advocated that without a strong, vibrant and effective civil society, checking corruption will be a distant dream. She also added a close look at the structure of the anti-corruption system in India shows that there is not a single anti-corruption agency that is independent of the government or has the complete powers to take action.

Dr. Bedi highlighted the background of the Movement Against Corruption, which paved the way towards the drafting of the Jan Lokpal Bill by a 10-member Joint Committee comprising ministers and civil society activists.

The talk by Dr Bedi was followed by an active interactive session with the FLO audience. The members were highly enlightened by Dr Bedi’s fiery talk on the deep rooted problem of corruption backed by disconcerting examples of the ineffective deterrence system against corruption in India.
