FICCI FLO Mumbai organised an evening session for its members on The Metamorphosis of the Textile Industry – Towards a green environment.
Today the Indian textile industry has witnessed tremendous progress both in the manufacturing processes and in consumer choice.Todays consumer in a fast moving world wants to keep up with the latest fashion trends but it needs to be affordable on the pocket.
The experts were:
Priya Mehta – Textile Curator ,
Simrat Chadha – Textile Consultant
Kaveri Lalchand – Founder ,Kaveri
Tasneem Merchant – Textile researcher
Who not only spoke on the rapid change and competition facing the textile industry but also on their personal contributions towards preserving the rich Indian heritage of paithani, kanchivaram etc weaves and use of these weaves to curate outfits which are preferred by the newer generation.
On the issue of sustainability many leading fashion designers are conscious about the green environment and are looking at options like recycling, use of eco friendly products , designing costumes which are a blend of mix and match.
Today global leading fashion brands are consciously taking steps to preserve the environment by using fabrics which do not need high maintenance. Indian designers are using plant based fabrics with organic dyes and encouraging their customers into redesigning of old dresses to recreate new designs.
Todays consumer is very possessive of their heirloom sarees , dresses , jewellery etc but they need to imbibe into the younger generation the concept and importance of these items otherwise sustainability will only be a conceptual concept and will be short run.
The conscious effort to bring about a change should be at the grassroot level and it should have a long term global vision so that we can achieve our targets of preserving mother earth.
