FICCI Ladies Organization (FLO) is organizing talks on sharing experiences with women, proficient in different fields. The first of the series was sharing experiences with women in power and the second in the series was sharing experiences with women in the arts.
The 3rd programme “Sharing Experiences by Women in Media” was organized on September 26, 2012 at FICCI Federation House, New Delhi.
The distinguished panelists were renowned names from the field of media – Ms Sonia Singh-Editorial Director, NDTV, Ms Sonal Kalra-Editor HT City, Hindustan Times and Ms Shobha Menon,Sr. Assistant Editor, Fortune India . Mr. Anshul Chaturvedi, Senior Editor, Delhi Times & Editor of the Times of India’s Supplements in North India moderated the session.
Kavitha Varadaraj, President FLO welcomed the panelists and emphasized on the changing role of Indian women in the modern world which is synonymous with the shifting role of women in the society and economy around the globe. She especially acknowledged the impressive and inspirational role played by women in media and appreciated the fact that women are successfully combating long-standing prejudices and are working their way to the top by dint of their hard work and capabilities.
Harjinder Kaur, Governing Body member and Programme Convenor introduced the panelists to the floor and opened it for discussion.
The panelists shared their own experiences and expressed their views on the media world. Sonia Singh said that media doesn’t discriminate women and relegate them only to softer genres of journalism such as fashion or lifestyle. They are deemed equally capable to cover politics or business issues. She also said that majority of the workforce in NDTV comprises women.
Sonal Kalra reiterated the fact that journalism is gender neutral and gives equal opportunities to both men and women.
Sobha Menon was positive about the fact that women have come a long way in the media industry and have been doing commendable work. She shared her own experiences in this arena and stressed on the importance of social media in the current scenario.
Anshul Chaturvedi steered the discussion and candidly stated that women are undoubtedly better than men in media and they are making it big in all possible ways.
